Multan is a city in Pakistan's Punjab province and the capital of Multan District. With a population of 1.7 million, it is the 11th largest city in Pakistan. The city is located on the banks of the Chenab River and is known as the City of Saints because of the large number of shrines and Sufi saints from the city. Multan was an important city in the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and was home to many of the great ancient civilizations. During the 6th century BC, it was conquered by the Persian ruler Cyrus the Great and became part of the Achaemenid Empire. In 327 BC, Alexander the Great conquered Multan and it became part of the Seleucid Empire. During the 3rd century BC, the city was annexed by the Indian Mauryan Empire and became part of the Mauryan Empire. In 711 AD, the city was captured by the Arabs under Muhammad bin Qasim and it became part of the Umayyad Caliphate. During the 10th century, it was ruled by the Ghaznavids and then later by the Ghurid dynasty. By the 16th century, it was being ruled by the Mughal.
